Properties of Matter Vocabulary

matter – Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter.

property – A property is a quality of matter that can be observed or measured. You can describe matter using its properties.

state – Matter can be described by its state, or the form it is in. Three states of matter are a solid, a liquid, and a gas.

solid – A solid is a state of matter with a definite size and shape.

liquid – A liquid is a state of matter with a definite size but no definite shape.

gas – A gas is a state of matter with no definite size or shape.
